Mediterranean diet pyramids have changed over the last twenty years, in parallel with the development of a multidisciplinary approach to food and diet research. The concept of a Mediterranean diet today includes not only dietary guidelines but a social framework which recognises the uniqueness of the Mediterranean diet as a social phenomenon. This text will analyse Mediterranean diet pyramid diagrams from the nineties to today, with an emphasis on the inclusion of social and cultural elements.
